American Poker Pro Wins $1,350,000 For Topping 328 Player Field by Erik Fast Published: Apr 26, 2014 For the first time in the World Poker Tour’s 12-year history the climactic season-ending WPT. Martin Jacobson – 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion By Steve Beauregard It may be a poker world dominated by brash-talking, anti-social internet poker whiz kids, but a genial, likeable, down-to-earth Swede has recently become its king. 2014 WPT World Championship - $15,400 No-Limit Hold'em $5 Million Guarantee - Poker tournament results, including winners and their payouts and winnings. A Swedish man who got his start playing online poker after late nights while he trained to be a chef is $10 million (£6.28m) richer after winning the top World Series of Poker main event prize on.

For the first time in the World Poker Tour’s 12-year history the climactic season-ending WPT Championship was not held at the Bellagio but made the move to the Borgata in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The event changed it’s buy-in from $25,000 to $15,000 and guaranteed a $5 million prize pool.

A total of 328 players turned out for the inaugural running at the new venue, but in the end only one player was destined to become the newest WPT champion: Keven Stammen. For the win the Ohio native earned $1,350,000 and 1,440 Card Player Player of the Year points. Stammen had already made three final tables this year, including a win in a prelim at the L.A. Poker Classic, and as a result of those scores and this most recent huge win, Stammen now sits in third place in the overall POY standings, with 3,052 total points and $1,610,129 in year-to-date.

Stammen entered the televised final of six with the chip lead, but he had to overcome some top-level competition in the likes of Curt Kohlberg (5th – $286,292), Ryan D’Angelo (4th -$363,930), the WPT’s own Tony Dunst (3rd – $452,729) and eventual runner-up Byron Kaverman.

Stammen began heads-up play with Kaverman holding a roughly 2-to-1 chip lead, and despite some ups and downs Stammen was eventually able to extend the lead even farther before the final hand arose. Stammen limped from the button for 200,000 and Kaverman moved all-in for 3,155,000 with the 44. Stammen made the call with the A8 and the two were flipping with the title hanging in the balance. The board ran out Q963A and Stammen spiked an ace on the river to secure the pot and the title while Kaverman was sent to the rail with $727,860 and 1,200 POY points.

Here is a look at the payouts and POY points awarded at this final table:

Day 2 of the Event #46, Poker Players Championship, is drawing to a conclusion. With $50,000 buy-in and the mix of 8 different games, this tournament has become the battlefield of the biggest names in poker – like their own smaller Main Event.

Registration for the tournament closed couple hours ago and final list of players was made so this is a great time to take a look and see who’s there and who’s not and what they are all fighting for.

World Series Of Poker Champions

First of all, the field this year was significantly smaller in relation to the last year. While 132 players took their seats in 2013, this year only 102 of them put up $50,000 needed to participate. This doesn’t take anything from the quality of the event, of course, but smaller numbers naturally result in a smaller prize pool. This year, cashing players will get to distribute “only” $4,896,000, and winner will take home $1,517,000.

Last year’s winner and defending champion, Matthew Asthon, earned $1,774,000 for his first place finish, but we now know for certain that he will not be defending his title. He lost several big Pot Limit Omaha pots and last of his chips went to John Monnette who made sure that the Championship will not have a repeat winner.

Several big names hit the rail during today’s play, including Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, Justin Bonomo and Gus Hansen, who actually made the this year's WSOP debut with this tournament. He was only there for couple levels, unfortunately, and hopefully it’s not the last we will see of the Great Dane in this Series.

Jason Mercier, on the other hand, has done pretty well for himself as play approaches the stop for the night, but knowing how things can quickly change in poker, nothing is set in stone. Keeping him company near the top are Matt Glantz, Shaun Deeb and Jonathan Duhamel.

It would be a bit pointless to try and name every known pro that took part in this tournament, as most of them are here. And as this tournament is scheduled as a five-day event, we will have to wait a bit more for the final table, but it can be presumed with great certainty that this one will be the most star studded final table of the entire series.

Although we will not mention every big name in the field, there is one out there that certainly deserves a mention. Godfather of poker, Doyle Brunson, decided to register for the play today and he is still fighting. Although Doyle mentioned that the long hours don’t seat with him the best anymore, he still found enough stamina to get in the mix with some of the best poker players in the world.
